The trek from New York to Los Angeles isn’t an uncommon one, so when Harlem’s Fashion Row CEO Brandice Henderson decided to expand her market, it was not a huge surprise. Harlem’s Fashion Row (HFR) is an influential arts and entertainment organization that engages audience and aligns brands with emerging designers of color. Founded back in 2007, HFR has grown and expanded to much success.
Last weekend, HFR presented Style Beat, its first runway show in Los Angeles. Smack dab in the middle of Grammy weekend, the show featured Kevan Hall, Waraire Boswell, Joseph Bethune and Kimberly Goldson. Following the show, a select group was invited to a Pre-Grammy brunch sponsored by Prudential, which took place at Oliver’s Prime Steakhouse in West Hollywood. There, fashion designers Waraire Boswell, Jospesh Bethune and Kimberly Goldson served on a panel moderated by Henderson, where an open and honest discuss ensued, covering their rise to success, struggles and hardships and all things fashion.
Over the span of a three-course meal, industry experts, tastemakers and editors were enlightened by the individual journeys each of the designers embarked upon. While creating something from nothing is not an easy feat, each panelist could boast a bit about some of their successes — Waraire Boswell has dressed prestigious and famous faces like Michelle Obama, Kanye West and Lebron James, Joseph Bethume is about to launch his latest collection with Tyson Beckford as its face, and Kimberly Goldson was a finalist on Project Runway.
