A friend of mine recently told me that 508 is 5-0-great, and although it’s cheesy, it’s also true. 508 Gastrobrewery is a refreshingly welcoming spot in West SoHo, known for its sharable plates and hand-crafted beer. Chef and owner Jennifer Hill created a wonderful Mediterranean-American menu, full of variety — from pastas and flatbreads to burgers and upscale pub grub — and perfect for sharing. Co-owner and brewer Chris Cuzme adds further intrigue to 508 with a rotation of house-made beers that will please even the pickiest of palates.
With such a diverse menu, 508 is a great place to go with friends with varying tastes. There is something here for everyone, whether they are vegan, vegetarian, meat-eater or just a picky eater. While dining here, we started off with a few dishes to share amongst ourselves, which we highly recommend doing. We tried their Five Cheese Spinach Artichoke Fondue made with their housemade beer, which was entirely too delicious. We also sampled their Chorizo Stuffed Calamari, which is slow simmered in smoked tomato sauce, along with butter beans, créme fraise and cilantro. This dish was very innovative and tasty, with a small kick of spice. I have never had stuffed calamari before and it was a real treat. Last but not least, we had their Beef Brisket Bulgogi Sliders, served with spicy kimchi mayo, cucumber and pickled jalapenos on a brioche bun. This was one of the tastiest sliders I’ve ever had and the bulgogi was so flavorful and juicy. It’s a real standout dish.
Now since 508 is a gastrobrewery, it’s only logical to have some of their beers. Since Cuzme brews in 50 gallon batches, their menu is always changing and each Tuesday they introduce a new beer. Not only are all of the beers I tried delicious, but they also have clever names like Honey Brew Brew and Divine Cocoa for Coconuts.
Regulars at 508 can’t seem to get enough of their outstanding pastas, so obviously we had to try at least one. We went for the Truffled Mushrooms Pasta, made with mixed mushrooms, sage, garlic, cream, white truffle essence and parmesan. The sauce was incredible and the whole dish really hit the spot. After all of these dishes we were too stuffed to try their dessert, but with so many other tasty sounding items on the menu, we know we’ll be back for more.
508 Gastrobrewery is located at 508 Greenwich Street.
