My kind of people are the ones that can sit back with a can of beer and enjoy a good show. In this case, I am specifically talking about the guy sitting next to me who was hooting throughout the show, so thank you guy with the two beers! The Dysfunctional Theatre Company in association with Horse Trade Theater Group and Under St. Marks, brings you A Clamour of Cabaret: A Volume of Vaudeville Varietals.

Songs, dancing, tap, burlesque, and space…? Hosted by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Edna St. Vincent Millay and performed at Under St. Marks, the show didn’t even feel like it was an hour and thirty minutes long. It went by so fast that when the lights came on, I wanted more! Walking into the theater and Maria Dessena was on the piano, Josh Hartung on the ukulele, and Emily Edwards was twisting balloons into animals for the audience; I got a snake! The different scenes and the transitions from one story to the next were all amazing. What really made this show flow was the chemistry between the “Hosts” of the evening La Diva Chiara Tarabotti (played by Nicole Lee Aiossa) and Il Mezzonote (played by Saidu Karmo) and the actual hosts of the evening F. Scott Fitzgerald (played by Rob Brown) and Edna St. Vincent Millay (played by Jennifer Gill). Both F. Scott Fitzgerald and Edna St. Vincent Millay made the transition from one scene to the other much smoother.

The Courtship piece was hilarious and did not get old; I don’t want to give too much away so if you see the show you’ll know what I’m talking about. There was also a burlesque scene…because who doesn’t like seeing beautiful women in beautiful costumes? The actresses had on corsets and lingerie — think Dita Von Teese. The burlesque was made so much better because the handsome Saidu Karmo was included in this piece; because of course the females in the audience (myself included) needed our own eye candy, as well!
