Last week saw the launch of a new exhibition in Manhattan’s Lower East Side that brings together local creatives from South Africa. NOT x Chris Saunders opened at Wallplay‘s concept space on September 10th, which fuses together the work of Jenny Lai, a New York based designer, and Chris Saunders, a Johannesburg based photographer. The exhibition will be on display through September 17th and will then continue in March 2015 at the Museum of African Design.

Utilizing screens, rooftop projections, photography, sketches and video, the exhibit showcases how a cross cultural collaboration can occur in our modern, digital age. Along with Saunders and Lai, other creatives such as accessories designer Dennis Chuene, vintage clothier Dr. Pachanga, menswear designer Floyd Avenue and costumer and puppet maker Macdonald Mfolo, all of whom live in different cities and countries, met via the internet over a two month period to collaborate on garments, sculptures and images to create this exhibit.

Over the two month period, the NOT garments move between the homes of the four local South African creatives, who each work with Lai to reinterpret the garments in their own unique way. Moving through different cities in South Africa, each person brings something different to the collection — the result showcases who the garments remain the same and/or change under the influence of different creative minds.
