A neighborhood gem in Prospect Heights, Citrico, offers Mexican staples with a friendly touch that makes it a no brainer if you live nearby.
With extensive offerings for vegan and vegetarian diners, the cozy ambiance of Citrico extends from the pages of the menu to the unassuming service provided by the waitstaff.
We started our meal with a cod-based ceviche, poached in lime juice and mixed with jalapenos and grapefruit slivers. It was light and refreshing with just the right hint of acidity – not overpowering, which can be the case with some ceviches. Pairing the ceviche with a jalapeño-based spicy margarita was not a bad call, either.
Next came my favorite part of any Mexican meal – tacos!
The al pastor checked all the boxes – generous portions of pork that was sweet, salty, and sour all at once hit the spot, and was stacked on airy tortillas.
Steak fajitas were predictable but satisfying. Sizzling strips of beef, speckled with flecks of ancho chile powder, melded in with the mouthwatering peppers and onions. It rounded out the meal in the best way possible.
