Ushering in their 26th season of contemporary ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet brings us the world premier of “Love Rocks,” a series of dances to songs by Grammy award-winning artist, Lenny Kravitz. The two-week season kicked off at the Joyce Theater in Chelsea last week.
Choreographed by co-artistic director Dwight Rhoden, draped in rock-inspired black costumes, all 18 dancers of the company beautifully interpret nine Lenny Kravtiz songs with remarkably powerful movements. With an elegant edge, the dance performances of “Love Rocks” are just as electrifying as Lenny Kravitz’s music. Performing choreographed dance to iconic musicians is nothing new for the dynamic ballet company; Complexions Contemporary Ballet has performed to the music of David Bowie and Metallica in the past.
Dance has the power to transcend many things, raising consciousness, which is why the company reprises ‘WOKE’ this season. Choreographed by Dwight Rhoden and first debuted in 2019, “WOKE,” through dance, examines our humanity amidst our divisive political climate. It also includes all 18 dancers of the company and is set to everything from hip-hop and R&B to electronica.
Complexions brings back “Bach 25” this season, which originally debuted in 2018. Set to the Baroque music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Sebastian Bach, the dance number is reminiscent of a more traditional ballet. Rounding out the program is “Essential Parts,” a compilation of favorites from the company’s repertoire.
Complexions Contemporary Ballet was founded by choreographer Dwight Rhoden and legendary dancer Desmond Richardson in 1994. The mesmerizing, diverse and distinct dance style of the company’s performances are not to be missed. The 26th season runs through February 2, 2020. Tickets can be purchased online at www.Joyce.org.
