Where do you go in New York City to switch things up? An Irish pub might not be the first thing that comes to mind when trying to think outside the box (hello, they’re on every corner), but Dempsey’s Pub recently rolled out a fun-fueled line-up of nightly events that might just be that little something extra you’re looking for.
A typical city bar, Dempsey’s has been a popular spot for New Yorkers since the early ’90s, but now they’ve got even more than pub food and drinks to entice you back for more. If you need a pick-me-up after your Monday workday, Downtown Game Night (7pm) will get that grin back on your face in no time (unless you lose, of course). The evening will feature three games, beginning with trivia and ending the a Buzzed Spelling Bee. The second game will rotate each week, keeping you on your toes (think Family Feud, Password, etc.).
Tuesday evenings bring you live music. At 8pm you can imbibe to the sounds of Irish traditional music seisiun (Irish for session) lead by John Nevin. Every other week a special guest artist will host the session, with top acts like Linda Hickman, John Redmond and many more. Now, Wednesdays brings you the Drunken Smartass Olympics, and we can attest that it’s worth stopping by for. The flagship of Trivia NYC, this is New York’s longest running and best attended quiz for over nine years. Folks can test their knowledge in this head-to-head trivia battle, while making new friends and consequently, getting drunk (it’s not easy trivia, by any means, don’t judge). Winners don’t go home empty handed either, prizes are given out provided by sponsors such as GSN, Astoria Bookshop and more.
Order up the Sampler Platter, which comes with your choice of quesadillas, wings, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, sliders, fish tacos and nachos (choice of 3 for $17 or $27 for 5) to soak up the suds, or any of the other pub-inspired fare offered at Dempsey’s. But mostly, come for the booze, stay for the games, and have a fun night out with friends.
