It was seemingly exclusive. Anyone who was someone was there. From posh celebrities and supermodels to famed artists and musicians. But even behind the lavish velvet ropes, the outsiders were invited. It was a time when gender was fluid, fashion was extravagantly over the top, but glamor and drugs and sex were always in excess. Paying homage to the disco era, the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York City debuted Disco at 50.
The fine art gallery that features music photography hosted a private party and VIP viewing on February 13th to kick off the exhibition. Nostalgic party goers dressed in bell bottoms and glitter, sipped on champagne, and danced to disco music to celebrate the artwork. The photography exhibit reexamines the flamboyant era where people danced at invite-only loft parties and legendary clubs like Studio 54. The month-long exhibition features photographers such as Bill Bernstein, Ron Galella, Lynn Goldsmith, Rose Hartman, Catherine McGann, Allan Tannenbaum and Chris von Wangenheim.
Gallery visitors will feel like they’ve been transported back to the era while viewing images of Grace Jones, Andy Warhol, Dolly Parton, Mick Jagger and Debbie Harry. The Morrison Hotel Gallery is open to the public and many photographs are available for purchase at the gallery or online. The Disco at 50 is now open for public viewing through March 15, 2020.
