Back in 2016, I went to Japan and one of my favorite parts of my trip was the food. Sure, New York City has plenty of Japanese restaurants, but to really experience another culture’s food, you really have to go to its country of origin. I discovered so many wonderful desserts and street food and just different snacks while I was in Japan, and similar to Bokksu founder Danny Taing, when I returned back to the states, I was disappointed I couldn’t find so many of these treats here.
Enter Bokksu. It is a subscription box service that delivers a beautiful box of curated gourmet and traditional snacks from Japan. The boxes all have different themes — ranging from Glamorous Tokyo, Citrus Summer, and Tropical Okinawa, and each comes with a tasting menu and culture guide, as well as a tea pairing.
We had the opportunity to try the Blossoming Spring box this past month, which had such a wide range of goodies, both sweet and savory, like Baked Chocolate Strawberry, Spring Rice Crackers, Sakura Shrimp Kakimochi, and Pocky Double Strawberry. The amount of food that the box packs in there is amazing, and there’s enough for sharing! In fact, Taing created Bokksu with that in mind, adding a tea to pair to encourage people to slow down, enjoy some food and share it with those you love.
The boxes have been known to feature limited edition items and exclusive collaborations like Mandarin Orange Kit Kats and Caramelized Apple Cobbler ChikaLicious. Bokksu has also partnered with chefs, including Chikara Sono of Kyo Ya.
If you’ve ever been to Japan then this is a great way to relive your experiences there, and if you haven’t it’s a great way to discover Japan in a whole new way!
