Aera Dance, an aerial dance company based in Brooklyn, premiered a new show last week called Covered Sky. Aera Dance frequently puts on fun, exciting, and unique productions that showcase original choreography and utilize three-dimensional structures such as fabric, poles and ropes to create a multifaceted performance art experience. The new show ran from July 24-28 at New York Live Arts. The show’s description is as follows:
“Covered Sky is a descent inwards to wear out the veils we use to hide. Let go, fall in, tear away. The moonlight mouth speaks the babble of that calling. Float down to the bottom. Nothing else points here. A fire burns. Do you like what you see?”
I’m not quite sure what all of that means, but I sure did like what I saw during the show. There is nothing quite like watching an aerial performance. The show featured three 20-minute acts, each as mesmerizing as the next. The dancers worked their way up poles, through hoops, and in between fabrics, showing off their super strength and graceful movements. The music and lighting were both perfect in relation to the show and made for a breathtaking performance.
The show featured Airin Dalton, Joshua Dean, Tatiana Depillo, Dalijah Franklin, Lara Michaels, Rommel Pierre O’Choa, Angel Reed, Elaina Royter, Joshua Taylor and Allison Wardwell. The performers had great chemistry and put on a great show! For those looking for a date night alternative to dinner and a movie, taking in an Aera Dance show makes for an exciting evening.
