In a city blanketed with Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, classic coffee shops need to separate themselves from the rest. The Roost, located in Alphabet City, creates a rustic and welcoming vibe once patrons walk through the doors. Once served organic coffee from the Brooklyn Roasting Company, patrons also enjoy delicious freshly baked pastries sourced from Balthazar Bakery.
Grab a coffee and snack and head to another room that makes people feel like they are walking into a living room. Filled with leather sofas, a fireplace and a television, it is the perfect place to relax and read the newspaper. Owners Vito and Cameron explained they wanted it to feel like an extension of someone’s apartment. “Space is limited in the city, so we want to make people feel at home,” Cameron said.
Sitting in the back room, people will notice a large pair of barn doors that reveal The Roost’s hidden gem. At 5 p.m. those doors open and The Roost becomes a bar.
Embracing its past life, Vito and Cameron have brought vintage items to create the bar. From the 100-year-old railroad ties turned coat hooks to the 100-year-old barn wood that was used to construct the bar, everything that was used has a story behind it.
You won’t find your typical beers on the menu, but a wide selection of locally brewed beers. Start off the night with a Coney Island Draft, a Mermaid Pilsner that’s not that heavy nor too light, but is just right. Another must try is Bells, a Kalamazoo Stout, that has a coffee taste, making it enticing to try.
The local crowd and music add to the friendly vibe that makes this coffee shop and bar a place to visit. From a daytime cup of coffee to a happy hour or late night drink, The Roost will have you coming back for more.
The Roost is located at 222 Avenue B and is open Sunday-Monday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Tuesday-Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.
