From the team behind New York cocktail institutions like Death and Co andAmor y Amargo comes a new concept focusing on bourbon and rye. In the space formerly occupied by Cienfuegos, Honeybee’s is a cozy, saloon-inspired space on Avenue A where you can sip expertly crafted cocktails while old-timey music plays softly in the background.
Each cocktail was made with thought and care, and showcased the versatility of both bourbon and rye. The eclectic menu features vegan barbecue fare, where some dishes are more robust and successful than others.
Some of our favorites were:
Rye-Tai
A take on the rum-based classic, this refreshing Overhouse Rye cocktail was paired with fresh lime juice, curaçao, and in an interesting twist, peanut syrup, which added a wonderful umami flavor. Served over crushed ice and garnished with a beautiful flower, this was an excellent way to welcome the warmer weather while staying on brand as a whiskey-focused saloon.
Sagebrush
My favorite drink of the night, this Turkey 101-based drink was slightly tart courtesy of the lemon juice and cherry syrup, but well balanced by the aroma of sage. I could easily drink this all night.
Southern Baptist
If you prefer a spicier beverage, may we recommend a Southern Baptist, a whiskey-based riff on a dark and stormy. Fresh ginger and lime juice are the only additives in this rye-based cocktail that will wake you up and cheer you up after a long, hard day.
Old Pal
A whimsical play on a Negroni, this drink ditches sweet vermouth in favor of dry, providing an added layer of bitterness to this already bitter cocktail. It was delightful.
