If you are even half as obsessed with indie music as I am, you will feel like you stumbled upon a musical gem. Indie-folk pop artist Julia Weldon released her sophomore EP on ITunes earlier this year entitled Light Is a Ghost and it’s phenomenal.
So who exactly is Julia Weldon? Born in Brooklyn and raised in a small town in New Jersey, her strong, unique personality shines right through her music. Not only is Julia a musician, songwriter and proud activist, but you can also add talented actress to her list of skills. You might have seen her play alongside Meryl Streep in Before and After or in an episode of Law & Order SVU. Her story amazes me. She is a self-taught musician from the age of twelve, but she really decided to focus on her music in her twenties. Although relatively new on the scene, she opened for two of my favorite artists Melissa Ferrick and Bitch while on tour.
Light Is a Ghost was produced by Saul MacWilliams, who has also worked with other indie artists, such as Ingrid Michaelson. The album also features Adam Christgauon on drums, who’s worked with amazing talents including Sia and Tegan and Sara. The follow-up album to her self-titled debut album features a more musically mature Julia. Offering a variety of sound and melody, Light Is a Ghost is everything from folk to blues rock. Her honest, raw and relatable lyrics make you ponder your life, family and relationships. Or maybe other people’s relationships and family. Either way, you’re engaged and touched.
Didn’t think I could fall in love with Julia’s sound even more until I saw her live at the Rockwood Music Hall in New York City. She has a certain raw charisma that draws you into her songs. She informed the audience that she just graduated from Columbia University, where she was attending to obtain a Master’s in music education. She will be focusing on her music full-time and I’m quite positive that this is just the beginning for Julia Weldon. Make sure to check out her upcoming shows at Brooklyn Pride on June 14th and the Knitting Factory on June 19th.
