Beer festivals have become synonymous with the summer season in New York City. But Loreley Restaurant & Biergarten decided to shake things up this year. Being the first biergarten of it’s kind in New York City, Loreley’s is giving us a taste of Germany with its first annual Winter Beer Festival.
During the winter, Germans like to drink stronger, more robust beer styles such as bock, doppelbock (a stronger version of bock), eisbock (made by freezing doppelbock and removing the ice) and weizenbock (a stronger wheat beer). During this festival, you get to try them all.
The two weeks of festivities (going on now) include two parties with free kegs, daily winter beer specials and a beer tasting dinner with German beer expert Rudi Eilers. Daily specials will include a rotating selection of winter beers including Riegele Augustus Doppelbock, Hofbrau Delicator, Schneider Aventinus Weizen Doppelbock and Köstsritzer Schwarzbier. The festival concludes with a wrap party and free keg of Einbecker Winter Bock on Saturday February 1st.
Sticking to German Gemütlichkeit, a tradition best explained by “coziness” in English, the restaurant has long wooden tables, which allows socializing with your neighbors. But Loreley’s is more than just your traditional German restaurant. Michael Momm, the owner of Loreley Restaurant & Biergarten is a professional musician, DJ and music producer. He represents the younger generation of Germans, people who grew up with German traditions but are able to translate them into a contemporary lifestyle.
Hey New Yorkers, beer festivals are not just for summer. Come in from the cold for a taste of Germany. All events are free, except for the beer dinner on January 29th (7pm), for which tickets are $35 and can be purchased at www.loreleynyc.com.
Loreley Restaurant & Biergarten is located at 7 Rivington Street.
