I had the pleasure of attending a wonderful poetry reading late last year. It is great to see that with technology changing so much around us, that the arts are still a big part of our community. I personally feel that we should support the arts more, and specifically, the artists themselves. The event I attended featured a poetry reading celebrating the publication of Woman at the Cusp of Twilight by Daniel Shapiro, and Meteor Shower by Anne Whitehouse.

The poetry reading took place at the Society for the Advancement of Judaism, Social Hall. The reading gave both authors a chance to read a few selections from their published works. While listening to Anne Whitehouse speak, I was thoroughly entertained, and the laughter from the audience proved that I was not the only one.  Many of the poems she read were very inspiring and thought-provoking.

Meteor Shower is a poetry collection that is split into six parts: “A Girl Who Fell in Love with an Island,” “The Eye that Cries,” “Moving,” “The Mask,” “Grout Pond,” and “Life’s Continuous Chain.” The sections have many poems that standout out to me, but there is one in particular that is unforgettable.

The standout poem from this poetry collection for me was “LOL.” The poem resonates a lot in this day and age due to the fact that a lot of the younger generation uses text messaging more than an actual phone call to communicate with others. The poem in itself talks about a girl that uses LOL in emails and texts but she is actually crying. This speaks volume in that a lot of the times our true feelings and thoughts are often hidden. Not only are they hidden, but it’s even easier to hide these emotions with through text. “LOL” is a short but sweet poem that delivers a deep and impactful message.

Anne Whitehouse is a writer who is known for her novel Fall Love; and her numerous poetry collections, including “The Surveyor’s Hand,” and “Blessings and Curses,” among many others. Her latest poetry collection, Meteor Shower, is available through Dos Madres and Amazon.com. For more information, make sure to visit her website where you can find the latest information on her upcoming poetry collections, and upcoming events.
