At 70 degree weather here in New York, cashmere might just be the last material on your mind. But what if I told you that that particular cashmere piece is not only stylish and high quality, but it also gives back to where it came from; which is the Mongolian Nomadic culture. That’s exactly what Naadam Cashmere does.
Based in New York City, Naadam Cashmere was co-founded by Matthew Scanlan and Diedrick Rijsemus in 2010. It was the result of a memorable trip to Mongolia. In Scanlan’s words “This is a collection that embodies a generation defined by people that are resourceful, adaptive, fashionable and, most importantly, conscious of the things they own.”
What makes the brand great is that its products are manufactured by nomadic Mongolian goat herders, from which 10% of the profits are reinvested into the World Bank’s livestock insurance program. This protects the herders from climate-related losses to their livestock, which allows the culture to thrive. Although new, the company also already has a great amount of support. With 13 days left until their Kickstarter Campaign ends, they have already exceeded their $20,000 goal, and have a new bar set to reach $100,000. The supporters of the campaign are also saving about 50%, with the sweaters being sold at wholesale prices.
Not only is the brand fashionable, as well as socially conscious, but it brings customers cashmere at more affordable prices, making it a winning situation for both the consumer and the manufacturer. So stock up this summer, and rest assured knowing you spent your money on a high quality piece that gives back. After all, you still need something to wear on those dreary, rainy days, right?
