A dimly lit bar reminiscent of the old LES sits across the street from the flashy Ludlow hotel, one of the more recent additions to this stretch of Ludlow street. Cozy and welcoming, this wood-paneled bar, complete with heat lamps, is easily a place you could make your neighborhood bar if you live in the area.
While No Fun has been open for three years and maintains a steady clientele, the kitchen has changed hands a few times, with Dorantes Cocina as the most recent (and arguably the best) iteration so far. With happy hour specials on food and drinks Monday-Friday, No Fun should definitely be a destination added to your Lower East Side watering holes.
Here’s what we ate:
Elote
While the funk on melted cotija cheese can be off-putting for some, don’t let it scare you away from ordering this classic Mexican street food. The corn is grilled and slathered with aioli and the cotija, and makes for a great snack.
Crispy Fish Tacos
With a batter that isn’t too overwhelming and a spicy aioli that perfectly ties the taco together, this is a wonderful option for all taco fanatics.
Torta
Tortas are not always a go-to for me on a Mexican menu (I find them overwhelming), but I was so happy our friendly bartender recommended this one. Thick slices of sourdough bread surrounded flavorful skirt steak, black beans, gooey Oaxaca cheese and ripe avocado to make the perfect savory sandwich. It was absolutely incredible.
