Everyone knows all about Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, but there is an equally captivating show — Nolcha Fashion Week, which showcases up and coming independent designers. Nolcha put on five shows last Wednesday at Pier 59 Studios, each promoting multiple designers and we were lucky enough to attend one of the shows. Kelly Rutherford was in attendance at the 4:30pm show we attended, supporting Clare Farwell London and sporting one of her dresses. The 4:30pm show showcased designers Tess Johnson, Bela Criacao, Claire Farwell London, Stacie May, Maita Marimo, and Magdalena Adriane.
Tess Johnson’s collection stuck to a light, neutral color palate, with gray tones and whites. She utilized a great print in a few of her looks, which really worked well. Bela Criacao also worked with neutrals, but added black to the mix. Her collection used lace and prints very well. There was one skirt in the collection that moved so well on the runway, I think every woman at the show wanted to buy it on the spot. Claire Farwell London used a lot of bright, bold colors that really pleased the eye. Her collection looked comfortable and easy to wear.
Stacie May’s collection was comprised of a multitude of textures, fabrics and prints, making for an interesting show. It had a classy, bohemian vibe and made the models look like cool girls you’d want to know. Magdalena Adriane showed fancy evening gowns, along with some nice suits. Perfect for any black tie event, these gowns were bright and fun. The real show stealer, however, was Maita Marimo, who last year was named Zimbabwe’s designer of the year. Her collection was poised, fun, and expertly crafted. She is a designer to watch — I know we can expect great things from her!
