Norsing Around for A “Taste of Iceland” + VIP Ticket Giveaway

by

In a land of sagas and Eddas, where Nordic and Gaelic culture blend just south of the Arctic Circle, stands the country of Iceland. The country is home to roughly 320,000 residents and the highest consumption per capita of Coca-Cola, it was originally founded in 874 AD by Norse settler Ingólfr Arnarson. In modern-day, the quaint nation showcases beautiful glacial rivers in the lowlands, as well as amazing hot springs and breath-taking glimpses of the Northern Lights. One unique characteristic of this once Danish Kingdom is the nation’s accessibility to geothermal and hydroelectric power, which account for 85% of the country’s energy consumption. Countless volcanoes, and geysers inhabit the island, as well, with the oldest known geyser in the world living in Haukadalur Valley. Tons of amazing wildlife call Iceland its home; everything from Icelandic sheep and cattle to Arctic foxes, and my personal favorite–Puffins. Although most people wouldn’t correctly describe the culture or history if asked candidly, Iceland has been home to several famous celebrities and prominent figures. Some of these individuals include Bjork, bands like Sigur Ros and OF Mice and Men, as well many famous authors, artists, and architects. Considering its cultural abundance it’s no surprise that the “Taste of Iceland” Festival would showcase in New York this year.

The “Taste of Iceland” Festival is a cultural showcase that is presented in a different U.S. city each year. This year’s celebration will be kicking off October 3rd through the 6th. The celebration will mark the first time New York has been chosen; which will offer a great opportunity to our Big Apple residents on the cultural awareness of our friends in the Norwegian Seas. The multi-day celebration will include the three things all Americans love– cuisine, music, and alcohol. A “Taste of Iceland,” which has partnered with the NORTH Nordic Food Festival (October 2-7), will be collaborating on a unique dinner experience open to the general public. Diners will have the option to attend a 4-course lunch menu on Thursday, October 3, or a 8-course dinner menu Sunday, October 6 at ACME (9 Great Jones St) in the East Village. The menu, which was created by acclaimed Icelandic chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason, of Reykjavík’s famous Dill Restaurant, will be a rare culinary treat. Tickets for the Icelandic culinary experience at ACME are limited and can be purchased at: http://www.icelandnaturally.com/events/taste-of-iceland-in-new-york-2013/tickets. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity — come discover some Nordic cuisine because this festival may not return to New York next year.

Besides culinary dishes, the festival also includes Reykjavik Calling concert on Saturday, October 5th. The show, presented by Iceland Airwaves and Filter magazine, is at Le Poisson Rouge (158 Bleeker St) and will include collaborations between three break-through Icelandic artists and two NYC acts. Musicians include alternative pop Lára Rúnars (who’s being touted as the next Bjork), electro-dance four piece Sykur, and singer-songwriter Snorri Helgason. The American acts will include a solo set by Alberta Cross frontman Petter Stakee, and a DJ set by Caveman. Last year showcased the group Of Mice and Men who went on to build a following here in the states. There are several hundred free tickets available upon registration, just follow the link below. Even if you’re uncertain about Nordic electro just think about the gorgeous Icelandic souls you may meet.
