One of the things I’ve never done during my time in New York is take in a show at Jazz at Lincoln Center. I know, it’s blasphemous! Luckily, I recently had the opportunity to not only take in a show, but also a great dinner while I watched. Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola is one of the best jazz club’s in the city and it was so much fun to spend an evening tapping my toes to the music here.
Dizzy’s recently welcomed a new chef, Corey Samuel, who just debuted his new menu at this Columbus Circle hotspot. Since jazz originated in the south, it makes sense that the menu also pays homage to the south. We started our night with their Taste of the South Hush Puppies and could not stop dipping them into the spicy honey sauce accompaniment. They had a great flavor and got us in the mood for more Southern fare.
I couldn’t pass up on trying the Louisiana BBQ Shrimp & Grits and they did not disappoint. The sauce added a different component and flavor to your typical shrimp and grits and it made for a really tasty, exciting dish. We also tried the night’s Market Fish, which that night was cod — it came with stewed butter beans, tasso, andouille, and winter kale. The sauce, again, was a winner and the butter beans added a great texture to the meal. We also couldn’t pass up on trying some of their side dishes. With too many to choose from, we went a little overboard with their Corn Bread with Habanero Infused Honey Butter, Roasted Brussels Sprouts, Bacon & Benne, and lastly, Mac and Cheese*. These sides might have been my favorite part of the meal! So delicious.
*We topped our mac and cheese with their own Hot Katchkie hot sauce, which is made exclusively for Dizzy’s by Great Performances. It’s comprised of sweet bell, jalapeño, Scotch bonnet and chili peppers and is fermented instead of roasted, giving it additional health benefits and great flavor.
Somehow we managed to taste some dessert and we opted for their Turtle Sundae, comprised of vanilla gelato, praline, butterscotch and hot fudge. It was surprisingly light and refreshing for a sundae and totally hit the spot.
But that’s not all we enjoyed at Dizzy’s Club. They also serve specialty cocktails and a selection of beers and wines, and of course…the show! It was so much fun pairing our dinner with a show (which ran 70 minutes) and it’s always a good time when there’s jazz music.
Dizzy’s Club has jazz sets beginning at 7:30 and 9:30pm every night, as well as a late night session at 11:30pm Tuesdays through Saturdays.
