Quench Your Thirst at Forest Hills Station House

by

Forest Hills Station House is a go-to spot in Queens, perfect for after work drinks or late night revelry. The cozy bar features distressed barn wood, handcrafted furniture, and exposed brick, turning this watering hole into a welcome reprieve from your daily lives.

The Station House boasts unique beer, plenty of whiskey, and upscale bar eats on their menu. The bar has 16 beers on top and 22 bottled brews, which are always changing, as well as a variety of bourbons, ryes, corn whiskeys, single malts, along with wine and cocktails. Standouts from the beer menu include High Watermelonz, a fruit beer from San Francisco, Greens Discovery, a gluten-free strong ale from Belgium, and Oskar Blue’s G’Night, to name a few. Additionally, since they focus largely on whiskey, their cocktail menu comprises of all whiskey-based cocktails. Standouts include the Station House Manhattan (Templeton Rye, Camparo Antica, Free Brothers whiskey barrel aged bitters, drunken cherries) and Cherry Smash (Rittenhouse Rye, Cherry Heering, Fee Brothers cherry bitters, simple syrup, fresh lemon, drunken cherries).

And while the drinks here are phenomenal, the food ain’t half bad, either. Just make sure you aren’t on a diet when you show up because the emphasis here is on fried fare. The menu is creative, putting small spins on classic dishes. We enjoyed the clever Short Rib Kimchi Empanadas ($9), made with braised short rib, in-house kimchi and siracha mayo and Beer Battered Meatballs ($8), made with veal, pork, and beef blend, served with stout mustard. Both dishes are made to share and pack a punch full of flavor. It is difficult to choose between the dishes on the ‘sharing’ menu, not to mention, there are plenty of burgers and sandwiches that are equally enticing. Sides are equally hearty, with options such as Beer Battered Onion Rings ($7), Chorizo and Queso Fresco Fries ($7) and Truffle Pecorino Fries ($7). Although they are called side dishes, the sides are so big that they qualify as a dish in themselves. We tried the truffle pecorino fries, which were delicious, but could’ve used even more cheese and truffle oil.

It’s a true feat to save room for dessert with all these heavy dishes being served, but if you are a bacon lover and happen to also have a sweet tooth, there is one item worth splurging on. Ever had a deep fried Snickers ($6) with bacon and bourbon glaze? No? Well now’s your chance.  Trust us, it won’t disappoint. Their other dessert option sounds almost as good — Sinful Brownie ($7), made with bourbon caramel and homemade whipped cream.

So while you may step inside for the enticing drinks they offer, the food will keep you seated all night and prepare you for round after round — so keep those taps flowing!
