Italian restaurants can get boring in New York City — same old food, tablecloths and atmosphere. While there’s nothing wrong with classic Italian, sometimes it’s more fun to do something a little outside the box. Sotto 13, located in the West Village, does just that. Sotto 13 showcases social Italian dining, offering small plates meant for sharing. They have an insanely amazing happy hour, offered Monday through Friday from 5-7:30pm. Customers can enjoy two for $13 cocktails and wine or two for $10 beers, along with free passed tapas and pizza. It’s a happening scene. Not to mention their world class $29 all you can drink boozy brunch, complete with a DIY Prosecco bar. But let’s digress. Apart from their fun and cozy atmosphere and killer deals, Sotto 13 also has great food.
We love that the restaurant dishes out small plates, meaning you can try more and share it with friends without breaking the bank. We loved their Fried Calamari ($11), served with spicy aioli sauce. The calamari was perfectly cooked and the sauce was a great spin on a classic dish. Their Wood Oven Meatballs ($9), which were passed around during happy hour, were a real treat, as was the Fennel Sausage & Roasted Peppers ($9). We are glad we came early enough to sample these tasty items!
We opted for pizza for dinner, and with so many options to choose from it’s a real tough decision. We opted for the Spicy Fennel Sausage & Caramelized Onion pizza ($15) after much deliberation. The pizza at Sotto 13 is really great — the crust is soft, mozzarella is fresh and the balance between the onion and sausage was perfection. I could have eaten five more pizzas! Along with our dinner, we enjoyed some of their specialty cocktails. I really enjoyed the Mango Margarita and the Winter Sangria. Both were really well made and very flavorful.
Sotto 13 also offers quite the dessert selection. In fact, their desserts are so crazy good, we are dedicating an entire article on them, so click here to hear allll about them!
Sotto 13 is located at 140 W. 13th Street.
