As someone who lived briefly in Spain, I am always on the hunt for authentic Spanish cuisine in New York City. 1oo Montaditos, a well-known restaurant chain with locations all over Spain and Florida, has opened their first NYC location in Greenwich Village.
The friendly locale attracts a fun crowd, with walls packed with old photos of Cadiz, iron lamps, and cozy, casual seating. The restaurant is named after its signature item, the montadito, which are small bread rolls stuffed with different traditional Spanish fillings. These tapas-style sandwiches come in 100 variations (get it?), with fillings like Serrano ham, chorizo and Spanish tortilla. Everything about these Spanish-style sandwiches are perfection — from the fresh-baked bread to the aioli smothered fillings. And with so many different options to choose from, there really is something for everyone.
While fútbol plays on TVs around the restaurant, customers go up to the counter to order their meals (the staff recommends 5 montaditos per person). While you wait for your order to be called up, please enjoy some of their Spanish drinks — they serve everything from Spanish beers and wines, to exciting options like Clara, a blend of Spanish beer and lemon-lime soda and sangria. Their extensive montadito menu even includes sampler platters and vegetarian options. How does it get better than this? The montaditos are insanely affordable, with $2.50 being the most expensive on the menu. Even the drinks are a steal, ranging from $3-$5. In addition to the montaditos, the restaurant also offers a selection of salads, cheese and meat platters, fries and brava potatoes. Oh, and did we mention they also have dessert montaditos? Yes, you can order sweet montaditos, made on chocolate bread, stuffed with ingredients like heavy cream and Oreos. It’s as good as it sounds.
As if that isn’t enough reason to check out the place for yourselves, every Wednesday 100 Montaditos celebrates ‘Dollarmania,’ where all montaditos are $1 and all drinks are $2. There are no bargains this good in New York City. Additionally, the spot has a backyard garden, which will definitely entice New Yorkers during the sweltering summer months.
