Fleetwood Mac went back on tour again and it comes as a surprise to absolutely no one that they are still as amazing as ever. I was lucky enough to catch their performance at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, October 7th, and it was…almost indescribable. I will try my best, though.
For one thing, the entire venue was completely packed. I am talking not a single space left empty, and truth be told, it seemed as if a few people snuck in a couple extra guests to one seat. Who can blame them, though, it’s Fleetwood Mac. The energy was through the roof. It seemed as if every single person was just so excited to be there and to be seeing them- old, young, in between, the love for Fleetwood Mac doesn’t seem to have an age constriction.
One of the most interesting and pretty emotional aspects of this particular concert was that it was part of a tour that marks the return of Christine McVie, who had left the group for almost twenty years, coming back for one performance towards the end of 2013. Both Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham made sure to mention how excited and happy they were to have her back on stage with them, and it was obvious that they meant it.
The show itself was spectacular. Stevie Nicks, decked out in a flowing black dress and boots, banged her tambourine and danced around like a young girl experiencing pure happiness. Christine and Lindsey hardly stopped smiling, and as the night continued, the emotion seemed to only increase. John McVie and Mick Fleetwood didn’t talk to the audience, but sat slightly elevated with the spotlight on them like royalty.
The group sang all of their best-known classics, including “Little Lies,” “Rhiannon,” and of course, “Landslide.” One of my personal favorite moments of the concert was Buckingham’s vocal performance of “Never Going Back Again.” The lights dimmed as he sang this, his voice cracking beautifully with emotion. The entire stadium was silent, and when he finished, there was a collective release of breath and an eruption of applause.
Exiting the concert, I was filled with a sense of fulfillment. Seeing Fleetwood Mac was an honor for me, and they proved that they are still as outstanding as ever. No matter how many years go by, this is a band that will never be forgotten. I know I sure won’t ever forget that concert experience.
