I remember a few summers ago when Gone Girl came out and I was instantly hooked…as was the rest of the world. Mary Kubica‘s debut novel, The Good Girl will instantly grip you the same way. Sure to be a national success, this is one of the best new books I’ve read in a long time. However, unlike in Gone Girl, this novel’s characters are likable, making the reader much more invested in the story and each character’s outcome.
The story, which is told from multiple perspectives, straddles two different timelines — some chapters focus on events leading up to a kidnapping, while others takes place after the kidnapping. The Good Girl centers around Mia Dennett, a young woman born from a prominent judge and stagnate socialite wife. One night Mia leaves a bar with a man for a one-night stand, which turns out to be anything but.
Mia is a pawn in an extortion plot and is kidnapped by Colin Thatcher, her supposed hook up for the evening. However, the story takes a turn when Colin decides to change the plan and whisk Mia away to a secluded cabin, where he keeps her for months. Throughout the story, you will hear from Mia’s mother Eve, detective Gabe Hoffman who is in charge of the search for Mia, and her abductor, Colin. The novel comes to a shocking and emotional conclusion that will leave readers giving a standing ovation. The fast-paced thriller leaves you feeling as if you personally know each character and will have you flipping through its pages well into the night.
Kubica’s first novel had us riveted and we cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next!
