I recently had the pleasure of not only attending the Summer Art & Fashion Installation of the very talented artist & Designer Eliana Petrides, but I was also able to speak with her about her beautiful art. One Five Hospitality and the Hyatt Union Square teamed up together to bring The Nature of Artifice, Eliana’s wonderful and unique installation, presented at Singl. Singl is a lounge located within the Hyatt Union Square.
The windows of Singl had the beautiful creations of Eliana Petrides. Eliana was chosen among a pool of very talented local designers to be showcased throughout the summer. Eliana is the artist & designer, as well as the Director of the Fashion Label HLiana.
I wanted to know the inspiration behind not only the installation, but also behind the flowers and blooms in her drawings. As Eliana described it to me, the city is filled with steel and cement, but that does not meant that there is no creativity flowing from this city. The way that Eliana sees it, is that the steel and cement nurture the garden that is New York City; the garden in this case are the artists that live in this city known as the concrete jungle. As I brought up that word Eliana told me that while some people do see the city as a concrete jungle, it’s also more than that. This concrete jungle made up of steel and cement, in fact nurtures the flowers–artists–to bloom and thrive. As she described it I completely understood what she meant by the steel and cement nurturing the garden because I see it every day as I walk the streets in Union Square and see the dancers dancing and the painters painting. Or even when I am taking the train and dancers come in and do acrobatic moves that I would probably break a limb if I tried to do. Looking at Eliana’s art and fashion against the window of the Singl lounge I realized that the city of steel and cement nurtured her tremendously and her creativity bloomed. Her philosophy and how she looks at the artists, such as herself and even me, is the reason why she was chosen from the dozens of other artists.
I was very impressed by Eliana’s art and fashion and I told her that if she ever made the dress (above) I would love to wear it because it’s just beautiful. Not only was the installation impressive but I fell in love with Singl! Sing is located at 80 East 13th Street. Sitting there with my friend, I looked around and I noticed how everything was eclectic. The place had different chairs with different colors…nothing matched, but that was the beauty of it. Everything from the ceiling to the floor did not match and that made me feel comfortable. It didn’t go together, but somehow it just fit.
If you want to have some fun make sure to check out the installation at Singl and grab some of the wonderful drinks that they serve. Next to Singl is also housed The Fourth Restaurant, which from the tour I had, seemed like an amazing restaurant. That is a restaurant that I am very interested in checking out, if I was impressed with Singl then I’ll probably love the Fourth Restaurant. Since I work just a few blocks away I am definitely making Singl my new spot to just chill.
