It’s always a treat to stumble upon one of New York City’s rarities…a restaurant and bar that has been around for generations. Mumbles is a family-owned restaurant located just outside of Union Square and it boasts tasty food and craft beer. The 30 year old restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. The American bistro offers a number of shareable plates and appetizers in addition to their sizable entrees.
Their menu is vast, with everything from flatbread pizzas and burgers to pastas and steak. With such a generous selection to choose from it can be hard to know what to order. We started with the Four Cheese Flatbread Pizza ($14), which was comprised of pureed caramelized onions, mozzarella, gorgonzola, truffled ricotta, parmesan and topped with a fried sage and balsamic reduction. This pizza was incredible and hard to put down! We also couldn’t resist getting our hands on the BBQ Spare Rib Sliders ($12), which came with horseradish slaw on a brioche bun. The meat practically melted in your mouth. I paired this with a Magner’s Hard Cider, which was perfect.
Next, we tried some of their pastas. I couldn’t resist trying Our Famous Penne a la Vodka ($17), which was smothered in a creamy pink tomato sauce and had bits of prosciutto — just what the doctor ordered. We also tried the Gluten Free Pasta with Grilled Chicken ($17), which was covered in a summer basil pesto, sweet peas and grape tomatoes. This dish was equally delicious. Now, we couldn’t leave without trying some of their dessert! We opted for the Zeppolis, which were covered in cinnamon sugar and came with chocolate dipping sauce. It made for the perfect end to a great meal.
Additionally, Mumbles has specials all the time! ‘Wha’d Ya Say’ Special are available after 5pm from Sunday through Thursday. Each night of the week offers a different special such as Burger and a Pint for $15 (Tuesday) and three course pasta night for $18 (Sunday). So if you find yourself hungry or thirsty in the Gramercy area, you know where to go!
Mumbles is located at 179 Third Avenue.
