Located just steps away from Tao and the Four Seasons in Midtown East sits the super trendy sushi lounge, Tokya. The multi-level lounge offers the ultimate in fusion — part high-end sushi lounge and raw bar and part trendy nightclub. I was invited to a tasting of the new spring menu.
Celebrity Chef Eiji (Taka) Takase, a veteran master chef of all things both cooked and raw, brings his culinary mastery back to New York City. It’s not surprising if you’ve heard his name before; his reputation precedes him. His resume includes Shibuya at the MGM Grand and Sushi Samba right here in NYC. Known for his creative flair and unique combinations, he has created a stand out menu for Tokya, including signature dishes like Hard Eight Spicy Tuna and Habanero Salmon.
The tasty spring menu includes dishes like tartar, drizzled with a to-die-for truffle oil, yellowtail with spicy jalapeño, Tuna Nigiri with savory foie gras, and meaty scallops with a citrus aioli — my favorite being the Tuna Nigiri with foie gras. The foie gras simply melts in your mouth. There are plenty of other speciality rolls on the menu, as well. All dishes are made with fresh fish and seafood from Japan and Mexico that are flown in daily, and very distinct Japanese ingredients with Latin spices and flavors from around the world.
In addition, the restaurant features an extensive wine and sake menu, as well as signature cocktails made with carefully selected ingredients like coconut vodka, ginger and refreshing mint and cucumbers. Orson Salicetti, master mixologist, incorporates a special twist on classic cocktails and all syrups are made from scratch.
Tokya is multi-leveled with the mezzanine level featuring an open raw bar with a 60-foot wrap around sushi bar, along with ample seating overlooking the main floor. So celebrate spring in New York City with an amazing sushi-fusion dinner and dance the night away at Tokya. Tokya is open 7 nights a week, and the restaurant hours are 5pm-11pm.
Tokya is located at 40 E. 58th Street.
