Get your kangaroo on at Burke and Wills, an Australian restaurant that boasts amazing food and cocktails on the Upper West Side. Having recently dined at the, restaurant I was very impressed with the food and drinks, as well as the overall space. If this is the first time that you are hearing about this restaurant, then you are missing out on great food, a great atmosphere and an even better wait staff.
The restaurant is very conveniently located near the one train and once you walk into Burke and Wills, you are greeted with a swanky bar near the entrance. The restaurant is always packed, as is the bar, so it’s best to make reservations ahead of time. The staff is very welcoming, greeting you with a smile as soon as you walk through the door. The dining space has a beautiful skylight and, while it was dark while I had dinner at the restaurant, it would make a great dining space for the summer. The dining room consists of two big booths that surround the whole space, with tables spread out across these booths for customer to eat. The walls are surrounded by dozens of pictures that range from all the way from birds to maps of Australia.
I have never tasted kangaroo meat before, so was very hesitant to taste it for the first time. I was able to taste a dish that included kangaroo meat and it was well-prepared and tasty. In fact, for those looking to try the popular native Australian meat, the menu has two options to choose from — the Kangaroo Loin and The ‘Roo Burger. The Butternut Squash Soup was very well done and a great entrée for a cold New York night. The Rotisserie Carrot Salad was one of the best salads that I have had in a long time and consisted of an amazing butternut squash sauce, dates, orange, and pistachio vinaigrette. The Roasted Salmon dish consisted of red pepper romesco, and baby carrots that were cooked to perfection. To finish off the evening, the Warm Chocolate Cake is a desert that everyone should try when visiting this restaurant. The cake was moist, decadent, and was topped with orange syrup and accompanied by amaretto crunch gelato.
Overall, if you want to have a great time with good food, cocktails, and a great atmosphere, Burke and Wills is a must-try restaurant in New York City.
