Between the sky-high rent, jam-packed subway cars (that run frequently on delay) and 9am-9pm work hours, to say New York is stressful place to live is an understatement. And while we do our fair share of complaining and vent sessions over a round of craft cocktails on the weekly (not to mention daily), we rarely speak about the crazy thoughts, behaviors and mood swings that the city and its denizens can frequently elicit in us.
Kelly Kinsella squashes the stigma in When Thoughts Attack, a one-woman play featuring the playwright and actress, which showcases the mental results of maddening Manhattan. Kinsella is shamelessly brilliant throughout the show, using magnetic charm and self-deprecating humor to reel in audience members and keep them there for 75 minutes of (sometimes uncomfortable) laughter. The story that unfolds on stage feels infrequently like a ticketed event and often like a one-way conversation with a neurotic friend who needs a hand hold or stiff drink–or three. Kinsella has an innate talent of connecting with audience members and an unnerving capability of providing mini doses of “crazy,” to which every seat holder can relate.
WHEN THOUGHTS ATTACK will run at The Cell: A Twenty First Century Salon (338 West 23rd Street) on Sundays at 7pm, through 12/22. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online or by phone at 800-838-3006.
